Apple's latest health-focused features, initially showcased alongside the new Apple Watch Series 9, are getting a wider rollout than initially anticipated. Coming with the release of watchOS 26 on September 15th, significant updates are headed to a range of older Apple Watch models. This means existing users won't necessarily need to upgrade their devices to benefit from the improvements.

One key addition is the innovative hypertension detection system. Utilizing the existing optical heart sensor, the Apple Watch will analyze blood vessel response to heartbeats over a 30-day period. This data-driven approach aims to identify potential signs of high blood pressure, providing users with timely notifications. Apple anticipates regulatory approvals (including FDA clearance) this month, with plans for a global launch across more than 150 countries and regions.

Furthermore, the highly anticipated Sleep Score feature is expanding its reach beyond the latest smartwatch models. Starting with watchOS 26, users with Apple Watch Series 6 and later, as well as all Watch Ultra models and the second-generation Watch SE and later, will gain access to this comprehensive sleep analysis tool. The Sleep Score leverages data including heart rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen levels, and respiratory rate to provide a holistic assessment of sleep quality, ensuring compatibility with iPhone 11 and later models.

Beyond these core health updates, watchOS 26 also brings a new wrist-flick gesture and live translation capabilities to compatible Apple Watch models. This significant software update makes notable health and convenience improvements available to a much larger user base, underscoring Apple's commitment to enhancing user experience across its product line.
