Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson offered a mixed assessment of quarterback Caleb Williams' performance in the team's season opener. While praising some exceptional plays that rivaled the NFL's elite, Johnson also highlighted several instances where Williams needs improvement.
The Bears' initial drive showcased Williams' potential, demonstrating poise and control in both passing and rushing, culminating in a touchdown. However, this strong start gave way to a prolonged period of inconsistent play. A late-game drive, although impressive, proved too little, too late to secure a victory.
"It was a rollercoaster," Johnson stated. "He made some throws under immense pressure that were truly remarkable, putting him on par with some of the league's best. But there were also three or four plays, at least, that we would have liked to see again. Caleb is self-aware, though, and very critical of his own performance. It's a starting point, and we'll work towards better execution next week."
Johnson emphasized the need for greater consistency from Williams, particularly in crucial fourth-quarter situations. While commending the team's effort and competitive spirit, he stressed the importance of enhancing execution. "The effort was there, the guys played hard, but the execution needs a significant boost," he concluded.
Entering his second season as the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, the pressure is on Williams to deliver more consistent performances for the Chicago Bears. His flashes of brilliance are promising, but sustained excellence remains the key to the Bears' success.
