A24's latest romantic comedy, "Eternity," takes a whimsical journey into the afterlife, offering a fresh take on the classic love triangle. Directed by David Freyne and penned by Patrick Cunnane and Freyne, the film blends the quirky charm of "Defending Your Life" with the unexpected twists of a classic Hollywood screwball comedy.

The story centers on Larry Cutler (Miles Teller), a devoted husband of 67 years, who unexpectedly finds himself in the afterlife before his beloved Joan (Elizabeth Olsen). Navigating the bustling Junction – a vibrant portal to eternity – Larry is determined to reunite with Joan. Their reunion is heartwarming, yet their idyllic afterlife takes an intriguing turn with the arrival of Luke (Callum Turner), Joan's first love, a charming bartender who's been waiting for her for decades.

Suddenly, Joan faces a poignant choice: spend eternity with her steadfast husband or rekindle a passionate romance cut short by war. The film cleverly explores the complexities of love, loss, and second chances, as Joan navigates this unexpected dilemma with the help (and hindrance) of her assigned coordinators, Anna (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and Ryan (John Early). Their comedic interactions provide much-needed levity amidst the emotional core of the story.

"Eternity" boasts a strong start, with its unique premise and engaging characters setting the stage for a delightful romantic comedy. However, the film occasionally falters as it delves into the emotional turmoil of Joan’s choice, causing the pacing to slow in the middle. While the performances are generally strong, particularly Teller's charismatic portrayal of Larry, the chemistry between Olsen and Turner could be stronger to fully sell their passionate past. The film's vibrant production design and cinematography beautifully capture the fantastical setting of the afterlife, partially making up for the pacing issues. Despite some minor shortcomings, "Eternity" ultimately delivers a satisfying conclusion, leaving audiences with a heartwarming and thought-provoking reflection on love's enduring power. The film opens in theaters on November 26th.
