Tensions flared in London on Saturday as a far-right anti-immigration protest, organized by controversial activist Tommy Robinson (Stephen Yaxley-Lennon), led to violent clashes with police and counter-protesters. Over 110,000 people took to the streets, creating a volatile atmosphere in the British capital.

The Metropolitan Police reported that officers were attacked with projectiles and assaulted after demonstrators from the "Unite the Kingdom" march breached designated security zones intended to separate opposing groups. A total of 26 officers sustained injuries, and 25 arrests were made. Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist strongly condemned the violence, promising robust police action against those involved.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan echoed the condemnation, emphasizing the complete unacceptability of violence and attacks on police officers. The protest, marked by the display of Union Jack and St. George's flags, saw demonstrators march to Whitehall, the heart of the British government.

This incident follows a summer of anti-immigration protests across the UK, some of which have also escalated into violence. The event's symbolic weight was heightened by a protester displaying a photo of American activist Charlie Kirk, recently killed, with chants echoing his name. Robinson himself, in a video recording, claimed the protest marked a long-awaited awakening of British patriotism, linking it to the desire for stronger borders and free speech. Robinson, formerly associated with the English Defence League, was recently released from prison.

Commander Clair Haynes of the Metropolitan Police acknowledged concerns among London's Muslim community, given past anti-Muslim rhetoric at similar marches. She stressed that everyone should feel safe in London and urged against calls for self-segregation. Conversely, a sizable counter-protest drew participants from diverse backgrounds and political affiliations, explicitly rejecting Robinson's message and affirming a vision of inclusive British values. Prominent left-wing politicians participated, and counter-protesters chanted slogans such as "No justice, no peace, no fascists on our streets." Journalist Sangita Myska highlighted the cross-section of society uniting against Robinson's hate speech.
