CDC Warning: Deadly Kissing Bug Disease Spreading Across the US

Thursday, September 11, 2025 | 0 Views Last Updated 2025-09-11T07:22:26Z

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about Chagas disease, a potentially fatal illness transmitted by the 'kissing bug' (Triatominae). While primarily found in Latin America, this disease is now reported in 32 US states, with confirmed human cases in eight: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. An estimated 280,000 people in the United States are living with Chagas disease, often unknowingly.

The kissing bug, easily identified by its orange-red to yellowish markings, feeds on the blood of animals and humans. Infection occurs when the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, present in the bug's feces, enters the body through a break in the skin, the eyes, or the mouth. This can happen unintentionally when a person unknowingly rubs the bug's feces into their eyes, mouth, or an open wound.

Early symptoms of Chagas disease may include Romaña's sign, a characteristic swelling of the eyelids. However, many individuals remain asymptomatic for years, only experiencing chronic symptoms later in life, which can include severe heart and digestive problems. These chronic phase infections can be life-threatening.

Unfortunately, there are currently no vaccines or drugs to prevent or cure Chagas disease. Therefore, preventative measures are crucial. These include eliminating kissing bugs from your home, using insecticide sprays, and carefully inspecting yourself and your pets after spending time outdoors, particularly in areas where kissing bugs are prevalent. Protecting yourself from this potentially deadly disease requires vigilance and awareness.
