The premiere of ABC's "The Golden Bachelor" Season 2 saw star Mel Owens confronted by several contestants regarding controversial comments he made about women over 60 in a pre-show podcast interview. In June, Owens stated on the "In the Trenches" podcast that he'd eliminate any contestant older than 60, adding that he preferred women who were fit and avoided "artificial hips and wigs." This sparked immediate backlash.

The episode opened with Owens acknowledging his previous statements, expressing regret and apologizing for his insensitive remarks. He stated that he'd been misrepresented, clarifying his preferences but admitting the way he communicated them was wrong. He hoped the women would give him a chance to show them his true self.

However, several women directly challenged Owens' comments. Diane, a 71-year-old librarian and women's hockey player, playfully yet pointedly questioned his podcast interview. Terri, another 71-year-old contestant, used a hand puppet named Carly to playfully but directly confront Owens about his preconceived notions of women over 60, even playfully slapping him with it. Carla, a 62-year-old former model, and Alexandra, a 67-year-old luxury yacht salesperson, also addressed the comments directly, emphasizing their desire to challenge stereotypes about older women.

Owens apologized to each woman individually, repeatedly emphasizing his regret and desire to move past the controversy. In a group setting, he reiterated his apology, highlighting that age is merely a number and that inner spirit knows no age limit. The episode showcased a candid and sometimes humorous exchange, demonstrating how Owens' initial comments were handled with grace and directness by the contestants. The show ultimately moved forward, leaving viewers to contemplate the implications of Owens' pre-show statements and his subsequent attempts at reconciliation. New episodes of "The Golden Bachelor" air Mondays on ABC at 8 p.m. ET, and stream on Hulu the following day.
