According to planetary scientist Joel Hurowitz, lead author of a study published in Nature, "On Earth, reactions like these...are often driven by the activity of microbes." These microbes metabolize organic matter, producing these minerals as byproducts.

However, it's crucial to emphasize that this discovery represents potential biosignatures, not definitive proof of past life. While the minerals could have formed through non-biological processes, the discovery significantly strengthens the hypothesis that Mars was once more habitable than it is today.

The samples were collected in a region believed to have been a river valley leading to a lake over 3.5 billion years ago, a time when scientists believe Mars may have possessed significant amounts of water. Perseverance, which landed on Mars in 2021, has been meticulously collecting rock and regolith samples, utilizing its advanced onboard instruments for in-depth analysis.
