The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has issued a statewide standing order, effective September 10, 2025, empowering pharmacists to administer the updated 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine. This crucial step aims to enhance vaccine accessibility for eligible Virginians. The order, authorized under Virginia Code § 54.1-3408 (I), allows pharmacists to provide the vaccine to individuals 65 and older, and those aged 18-64 with at least one underlying medical condition, without requiring a physician's prescription.
State Health Commissioner Karen Shelton, MD, emphasized the importance of increased access to the new vaccine formulation, acknowledging the public's concern and commitment to improving vaccination rates. "We are resolved to increase access to the updated formulation of the COVID-19 vaccine to all eligible Virginians," Dr. Shelton stated.
Virginia pharmacists can administer vaccines under two methods: direct authorization from a medical provider or by adhering to the Virginia Board of Pharmacy's statewide protocols. These protocols align with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Immunization Schedule, although the current schedule references the 2024-2025 formulation. The anticipated 2025-2026 formulation is expected to better target circulating strains.
The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is scheduled to meet on September 18-19, 2025, to formally review and likely approve the updated vaccine. Following ACIP's recommendation, the CDC Director, or the Secretary of Health and Human Services, will provide final endorsement or approval.
Individuals aged 18-64 without underlying conditions and those under 18 are advised to consult their healthcare providers regarding COVID-19 vaccination.
