Kelce's Regret: Collision Costs Chiefs Star Receiver Worthy in Season Opener

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce took full responsibility for a collision that sidelined wide receiver Xavier Worthy during their season-opening loss to the Chargers. Speaking on his podcast, "New Heights," Kelce described the play as "frustrating," explaining that his route inadvertently took him into Worthy's path, resulting in a right shoulder injury for the young star.

Worthy, who led the Chiefs in receiving last year, was considered their top offensive option entering the 2025 season, especially with Rashee Rice serving a six-game suspension. Kelce acknowledged the significant impact of his error, stating that Worthy "had his guy beat" and that the game's trajectory changed drastically after the collision. The Chiefs ultimately fell to the Chargers 27-21 in a game played in Brazil.

The injury's severity initially caused concern, but Chiefs head coach Andy Reid later clarified that surgery or injured reserve wasn't being considered for Worthy. While his status remained day-to-day, Reid confirmed he would miss practice, along with rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals. Reid emphasized that both players are showing progress in their recovery.

Kelce expressed deep remorse for the incident, stating he owes Worthy "big time" and that the collision significantly impacted his own performance. The veteran tight end admitted the situation was intensely frustrating, not only because of the team's loss but also because he directly contributed to the injury of a key teammate. He reflected on the need for improved accountability and a faster start for the team moving forward.

The Chiefs face a tough challenge in their next game – a rematch of Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team will be hoping for a quicker recovery for Worthy and a better showing overall.
